"Why am I not getting interviews?" It's one of the most common questions I'm asked. And I understand it. You update your CV. You apply thoughtfully. You know you can do the job. And still, nothing.
The honest answer? It can be you. It can be the market. Often, it's a mix of both. Here's what I'm seeing right now across creative and digital roles.
Many CVs describe responsibilities. Few demonstrate outcomes.
"Managed campaigns" is not the same as "reduced CPA by 28% across three channels." In competitive markets, outcomes get attention. If someone scanning your CV can't quickly see commercial impact, they move on. That isn't fair, but it is real.
Application volume is high.
Across marketing and creative roles, from emerging talent through to senior hires, it's not unusual to see hundreds of applicants. Strong candidates still miss out. Sometimes it isn't a capability issue. It's simply numbers. If you're only applying through job ads, you're competing in the busiest lane.
There's more risk-awareness in hiring.
Managers are thinking about stability. Will this person perform? Will they integrate? Will they stay? A clear narrative about your direction matters. Why this move? Why now? Why you? If that story isn't obvious, hesitation creeps in.
Companies are combining skill sets.
Strategy and execution. Paid and organic. Creative and data. Budgets are tighter and headcount is scrutinised, so instead of hiring two specialists, businesses often try to hire one person who can cover multiple bases. You don't need to be perfect across everything, but you do need to show both depth and range.
So before assuming the market is broken, review:
Is my CV outcome-led?
Does it show range as well as depth?
Am I relying only on applications?
Is my salary expectation aligned with current budgets?
None of this is about lowering your standards. It's about positioning yourself intelligently in the market we actually have. Interviews are still happening and people are being hired every day.
