What Happens After the Promotion?

A promotion is a big moment - it's recognition of what you've achieved and a bet on what you can do next.
But what happens after the excitement fades?
This is where things can get tricky.
What got you the promotion isn't always what helps you succeed in the role.
What helps in the shift to leadership:
Get clear on what's expected now - not just tasks, but results and responsibility
Shift from doer to enabler - your job is to coach, delegate, and develop others
Ask more questions - leaders who listen deeply make better decisions
Don't go it alone - find someone who'll challenge your thinking
Where things can go wrong:
Taking on too much to prove you still deserve the role
Struggling to let go of control
Dodging tough conversations to avoid conflict
Relying on what worked before - without adapting to what's needed now
The best leaders I've seen stay curious, lead with a growth mindset, and make space for others to thrive.
As Carol Dweck writes:
In the fixed mindset, leaders live for the validation of their greatness. In the growth mindset, they live for growth - for theirs and their people's.
They build others, and keep growing themselves.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to someone stepping into their first leadership role?
